My Travel Writing Scholarship 2011 entry - My Big Adventure

My adventure began with a typical trip from Cardiff to London, which I had taken many of times. I was on my way to an interview, and only had a vague idea what the job had in store for me. By the end of the day my head was spinning with every emotion known to man. The interview went well, but there was just one thing. The job was abroad, and with over 50 offices to chose from... I had a lot of options.
Before I could blink, the time to move had come around. After much discussion I had decided on Hong Kong. Throughout the whole process of planning my trip, I felt like I was in a zombie trance. Nothing had really sunk in, and the whole concept of moving half way across the world alone didn't phase me in the slightest.
The drive from Cardiff to London was long and my mind was racing, but outwardly I was calm. My step-mother was more excited than I was, especially by the time we arrived at the airport. After a frantic panic over the weight of my suitcase, which involved tearing out some of my neatly packed clothes, I was finally ready to say goodbye. I stayed strong and walked through security.
After boarding the plane, excitement kicked in. I enjoyed the simple novelty of having my own blanket, cushion and flight socks. Throughout most of flight I was awake with anticipation, until the last few hours, where I must have passed out with exhaustion. I awoke just as we landed and started to panic. A wave of fear washed over me as passengers stood up to find their bags. My eyes filled with tears as the realization I was on the other side of the planet, miles away from my family or anyone I knew, and was completely alone.
Once a brief moment had passed, I pulled myself together and set about leaving the airport. I stepped outside and boarded the bus, which stopped by my hotel. I didn't know what I was expecting, but certainly not what was staring me in the face as the bus launched itself across the motorway.
Monstrous building's towered above me in a daunting manor, the windows on the building's were so tiny they were barely visible. My eyes eagerly scanned the views trying to take everything in as vast amount's of greenery could be seen in the distance. I was trying to consume the little details, such as exotic plants and palm tree's planted alongside the motorway, but the bus tore across the road angrily giving me little time to take everything in.
The bus approached Kowloon city, and the streets were filled with bright signs, flashing lights, loud noises, with people pouring out of shopping center's. Taxi drivers honked their horns and television screens blasted adverts above. As I stepped off the bus outside my hotel, people came rushing over trying to sell fake watches. I had finally arrived.
