The train journey from Beijing to Kashgar is more than 60 hours in total. Many relocated Han Chinese must make the journey regardless of where their families are.

Most schools in Kashgar are run by the central Chinese government and most Uyghur minority children do not attend. At the moment, though, the don't mind.

An almost awkward sense of loss surrounds the Uyghur Muslims in Kashgar. The central mosque in the heart of the old town now requires an expensive entrance fee.
