My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited

I am a 21 year old third year college student studying at Massachusetts College of Art in Boston. I am from the Philadelphia suburbs but I have made it a priority to experience and engage in foreign cultures. I think the reason I have always been and continue to be so drawn to photography is because it is a medium of actual depiction. I value art that can have the power to change things and make an impact towards everyone; not just the art enthusiasts. Journalism is dependent on this concept. Its sole purpose is to reach out to as many people as possible and share with them knowledge from around the globe. Photojournalism has been used as a great tool to bring together people of different perspectives and backgrounds. And when it is done successfully we can realize just how similar yet unique we all are. I don’t believe that art, and especially photojournalism has become art or served its purpose until it is communicated to an audience. This is why it pains me that I have been unable to attain a wide reach for my work. With this great opportunity given by National Geographic I hope to finally make a leap from an amateur with a dream to an impact-making photojournalist.
