Documentary Scholarship 2011 entry

I’ve been passionate about filmmaking since I can remember. I studied at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, and ever since taking a class, I’ve been hooked on documentaries. Nothing compares to the relationships you build and the new perspectives you gain through documentary film. I started following Ken, No No, and Ariel last summer. I was looking for a compelling subject matter and thought what better community to explore than one I encounter every day in the city: street vending. Three-and-a-half intense, grueling months later, it turned out to be one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. I think this video connects with the theme of “local encounters” because these vendors are people we pass daily, yet often overlook as fellow human beings. I wanted to explore what makes Ken, Ariel and No No unique but also what unites them together. The opportunity to make a documentary in Australia would be life altering for me, not only as a filmmaker, but also as a human being. I love meeting and learning about different peoples and cultures because I always end up at the same conclusion: what makes us unique is what brings us together.
