Understanding a Culture through Food - Food Alchemist

SYRIA | Wednesday, 20 February 2013 | Views [418] | Scholarship Entry

Correct.. I did never thought about the food we make in Syria until I travelled outside!
Since one is born, everyday, at morning, noon, night, and who knows when more, he eats and eats. Food habits become nothing more than cultural rituals.
I never thought that our traditions, other than telling about our cultural history, might reflect some aspects of our way of thinking.
However, time came when I traveled away. Traveled again and again. Moved from the Middle east to southern Asia, and then a long trip to the cold north of Europe.
I can not eat swine products or drink alcohol. What is in this food? Why what you call sweets does not seem to be sweet.
More work on my shoulders. For the first time in my life, I have to cook for my self. Let's see what I find in the supermarket.
White yoghurt is barely available compared to those huge amounts of fruit flavored ones! Why too much pasta and why the bread is expensive!
I will eat in a restaurant. Everything is somehow simple. Cook, fry, boil and that's it..
Now I started to think back about our food in Syria. It was too much complicated to prepare, takes much time. Yeah, back in the days, women did not work. They were supposed to stay at their homes, hence, they used their time to create all of these various dishes.
