Islands of Curiosity

My Scholarship entry - Curiosity: a story of nature and science.

New Zealand | Friday, November 21, 2014 | flickr photos

I’m Umberto, I‘m 27 and I’m an Italian PhD student of oceanography in the UK. I’m applying for this scholarship because it merges nature, my passion since I was a child; and photography, an addiction since I got my first proper camera 4 years ago. Photography has become my way of discovering the world – to the point that when something catches my attention I don’t say “that’s nice” anymore; instead I say “that would make a great photograph”. Photography involved me on a never-ending hunt for details, colors and shapes hid around me. It made me more aware and curious; I started to observe more than passively watch.
I’m not theoretical as person. I learn by doing. I want to work in the communication of science, where images are very powerful tools, so I need to learn how to take THAT photograph that can pique the interest of others and communicate a message and knowledge. This scholarship is the opportunity for me to learn how to do it with an expert. I practice sport regularly, I wake up before the sunrise and skip meals if I want a particular shot, I’m open as a person and I’m eager for new adventures. I feel I could be what you are looking for. I'm ready. When are we leaving?
