It was the 22nd day of December, as far as I can remember; the date of the interview that made one of my childhood dreams came true – becoming a teacher. I already gave up the hope of having that part-time job because months have already passed when I was informed that I qualified so I thought it was totally forgotten. But then, I received a text message giving me the details of the final interview with the boss. I passed the interview and started with the job right after. I am now an English teacher to Korean Kids!
The first few days of classes have been good. I met different kids of the same nationality and I found out that no matter where they are being raised, kids are kids. Even though I enjoyed meeting them and I was pleased in our little conversations, my interest with Asian countries never changed. For me, Asian countries are as dreary as its history being thought in school and if given a chance to travel, Asia will be my last choice.
Days passed and I realized that being a teacher is something more than explaining the lesson to the kids. It is also about dealing with their strengths and weaknesses, hearing their stories, and making them feel that they are loved. Because of this, I find myself spending more of my free time being with them.
Having heard their stories about the places they have been to, which are mostly Asian countries, I felt the enthusiasm as the children share every bit of information about each places including the history! It made me wonder how amusing those places are. It’s as if these places have their own way of amazing children and I want to witness it too! Moreover, the eagerness to adapt with the kids made me want to go to every place they have been to so I can relate with their stories better.
I came to a point that I found myself attached to these kids and as our parting day approached, some of them would often asked me to visit them in Korea it’s as if I live just a town away. The bond I established with the kids made me appreciate Asia. Time will come for me to serve the greater number and it will be a pleasure if I'm giving it first time to the people of my own race - Asian.
