My Scholarship entry - Misplaced Man Cub

USA | Thursday, October 30, 2014 | 7 photos

Please help, I am trapped in an urban jungle.

I dwell in a cubicle for 50 hours a week dreaming about my next escape into the wild. Any chance I get, I take a long weekend and hike out 15+ miles into the Florida wild and primitive camp. Last weekend, a friend and I went to flooded Myakka State Park for primitive camping, where we practiced survival techniques including gathering standing water and purifying it (made some great pine needle tea!). On a prior trip, I opted to leave my tent at home and build a lean-to out of palm fronds to sleep in.

My true stomping grounds in Florida are The Everglades. I've explored and photographed it enough to know of a secret super cluster of wild ghost orchids, I've swampwalked with some of the cast of the Gator Boys, I've tracked and found black bears, and been within feet (sometimes inches) of scores of alligators and venomous snakes (luckily I've studied how to be as safe as possible in their presence). I love it.

I am an experienced hobbyist photographer, hopefully my photos will speak for that more than I can. Please see the flickr link attached for some of my work!

Most of all, thank you very much for your time and consideration.
