Wondrous Atitlan

My Photo scholarship 2010 entry

Guatemala | Wednesday, August 18, 2010 | 4 photos

It was my first trip to Guatemala and lake Atitlan. I remember the long drive from Antigua to the lake. Everything I saw along the way filled my head with thoughts of how such a beautiful country and people struggle with such an ugly reality.
While these thoughts set in, I started to think of a dialogue. A dialogue between a person and a place, without all the negative connotations of country's war-torn and deeply scarred past. A beautiful lake, a boat resting on its shores, a special view from a local inn and the mist rising to meet the sky above one tremendous volcano. These images inspire me to share with you the whole story, the story of a great people that still rule the land with many languages and a rich culture that is Los Mayas.
I have only spent 6 weeks in Guatemala and maybe a week on the lake. This place created something in me or rather revealed to me what already existed: a passion for photography, places, and people that collectively bring us together to begin and continue our dialogue as we are all here in this world different but the same.
