My Photo scholarship 2011 entry

I saw Jason speak 10 years ago while in my first year of photography studies at Melbourne's RMIT university. He was incredible speaker and amongst others he was one of the many photographers whom has shaped my direction as a photographer today. I have worked in a range of job since graduating including working for suburban newspapers, assisting and in 2009 I spent a year travelling and shooting travel stock for Lonely Planet Images. For the past 18 months I have been working as a photographic assistant in London but I haven’t been happy and I have recently decided to return to Melbourne to once again concentrate on working towards a career in travel and documentary photography. I currently consider myself a pro-amateur as I earn less than 25% of my income through photography but I think an experience watching, working and learning alongside a great photographer and mentor like Jason is exactly what I need at this stage in my career so that I can push that extra step towards becoming a professional photographer. I’m passionate and I enjoy learning about different cultures and I want to see and experience as much of the world as possible. I love photography for the places it takes me and for the doors that it opens when I am on the road. I’m excited by beautiful images and I’m driven to take better shots so that my images stand out as the best. My dream is to be travel and documentary photographer and I am particularly interested in covering issues relating to animal poaching (an issue that is close to me due to an experience I had working with Puma’s at refuge in Bolivia in 2003) and also environmental issues such as climate change.
