Jerusalem: City of GO(L)D

My Photo scholarship 2010 entry

Worldwide | Sunday, October 10, 2010 | 5 photos

I have chosen these photos because I believe they tell a story about Jerusalem that so often goes untold.
As an outsider it is easy to view Jerusalem through a very narrow scope. It is easy to believe that conflict and religious observance dictates the movements and actions of all who inhabit the city. We fail to think of girls walking through a market place, as other girls would a shopping centre, of old men strolling through Temple Mount, as others would there local botanical gardens, of men tending to ancient graves on Olive Mount as others would there local cemeteries. Obviously Jerusalem is a place of immense spiritual significance but even the most important places of worship require day to day maintenance due to the sobering physical realities of any earthly structure.
I believe I would make a great candidate for the scholarship because I have always loved history, culture, religion and geography but it is only now that I am finding a way to express this through my new passion in photography. At 29 I believe I am young enough to view things with fresh and enthusiastic eyes but old enough to recognize and value the significance and uniqueness of every new experience I encounter.
