Tian's Entry of Xiangxiang, Hunan, China

My Photo scholarship 2010 entry

Worldwide | Sunday, October 17, 2010 | 4 photos

Hi. My name is Tian and I’m from Canada. I’m currently attending college, majoring in economics. Born in China, I took these pictures last year in Xiangxiang, Hunan Province, China, which is my hometown. I had a great time shooting them.

I grew up really enjoying beautiful things and my father had an impact on that. He was into painting and photography himself. Photography is now my passion and I love to go through long days chasing the best light. I hope these photos can show my love for my hometown and tell a little about it. I believe a photo freezes time, yet it captures not only what I saw but also what I imagined and felt at the moment.

Like every other contestant, I want to win this scholarship to have a chance to work alongside Jason and explore the beauty and mystery of Bhutan. Working for National Geographic is still a dream to me and I’d be honoured to see what it’s like to shoot an assignment on such an exotic location. Perhaps I can become a photographer travelling and recording the world for National Geographic myself someday. Obviously I hope to learn more technical tricks about how to use my camera and tips on waiting for the best light, but more importantly, I really want to see how Jason tells amazing stories about a place, or an animal, or people and express happiness, love and even sadness through imagery.

I’m a friendly and easygoing person, I stick to schedules well and I am fit to hike over fairly long distances.

I hope my photos show some potential and I would be really thrilled to win this scholarship. Thank you.
