Hidden Treasures

Peace Within

The most common way to this piece of paradise is by boat. I arrived alone, stepping on land that had never been touched by my feet. Upon disembarking, I began to visually inspect a place I had never seen. A place described as 'magical' by my dear friend Catherine. I did not go to Koh Pha Ngan to experience a Full Moon Party. I found myself on the island of Koh Pha Ngan, present in the moment on a quest where I expected nothing, but remained open to receive whatever was being offered to me.

After a hectic three day journey, I became acquainted with an intriguing, versatile group of people. My best friend, I must admit, turned out to be the faded orange hammock that was tied to the beams of my bungalow. I was afraid to get into the hammock, thinking it would come crashing down and that would be the end. With Catherine's encouragement, I crawled timidly into the hanging structure, settling in, with my eyes fixed on the tiny cracks in the post. After my nerves quieted and I slowly began to trust the hammock, my eyes were able to focus on what was in front of me: a sea that stretched into forever.

Each morning thereafter, I would lay in the faded orange hammock and watch the sun rise. As a matter of fact, I would lay in that hammock for hours, listening to the waves crash onto the shore, readily becoming lost in my thoughts. The view from the hammock was breathtaking. The colors of the light blue sky, deep green jungle, and the ocean containing shades of both were brilliant. For the first time in my life, simplicity had meaning and it was beautiful. There was peace that came with this realization. A peace that was offered and I gladly accepted.

It will never bother me that I traveled half way around the world to gain an appreciation for the simple things. I am beyond thankful that I was able to have such an awesome experience. I visit that place from time to time but I don't go very far. All I have to do is unlock the memories that live within my heart.
