Cape York: We made it!

Under the brilliant blue of the sky
by the blazing heat of the sand
we watched the dugong swimming by
the rocks at the edge of the land

In waters tinted opal blue
we watched the dugong swim
and a strangeness came to me and you
on Australia’s northern rim

We seemed cast back through the ages
to a time when all was young
and the elements in their rages
spoke in a different tongue

When volcanoes spewed their molten fire
and hurled the cinders high
and strange birds spiraled ever higher
beneath this alien sky

When strange beasts walked upon the land
and all the world was mist
and small creatures burrowed in the sand
when nature shook her fist

Almost untouched this place may be
but can it be forever more?
can it keep its unique beauty
this place down by the shore?

Where the tip of a giant’s finger
is pointing to the sea
where we did for a moment linger
awestruck, you and me!
