My Photo scholarship 2011 entry

New Zealand | Wednesday, November 2, 2011 | 5 photos

Photography has always been a passion of mine and for as long as I have owned a camera I've aimed to raise questions and tell stories through my imagery. Coming from New Zealand the outdoors has also been a part of my life with many days spent absorbed within the landscape observing and photographing the wildlife while dreaming about similar experiences in different continents.
I am currently in my final year of a Bachelor in Visual Arts degree where I have learned to express other people’s stories through still imagery. The opportunity to be mentored by a National Geographic photographer would be an absolute dream come true as I understand first hand experience is the most valuable education a photographer could get. This would be very important in showing me how a professional works in the field allowing myself to learn the skills and apply them into paving a future as a photographer by experiencing and capturing other cultures.
Although I mentioned that photographing people is my main area of focus the series that I have submitted is focused on the absence of people.
Green is a series about time and patience reflecting upon what is infront of us but not necessarily visible. By following a self imposed system I have captured different golf courses in the early hours of the morning of my home city Dunedin. I not only wanted to show a series of manufactured landscapes from a different perspective but also allow us to see how they create a unity from disparity
I believe that this scholarship would not only change my perspective of photography and how to utilize the medium more effectively but also change my perspective on my place in the world by being under the guidance of such a distinguished photographer like Jason Edwards.
