Hitchhiking to Macedonia

MACEDONIA | Monday, 12 May 2014 | Views [125] | Scholarship Entry

One night, I found myself in a cozy little karaoke-bar in my hometown, in Romania. The night was coming to an end, but I've desperately wanted to sing another song, in order to say good-bye. As I was singing, I've noticed two girls staring at me, being totally absorbed by my singing. They clapped so hard when I finished, that I felt to go at their table and thank them. We immediately clicked and I felt again that smooth feeling that the night was young. One girl was Romanian and the other was Macedonian. They told me that they were heading to Macedonia for a summer holiday the following day. I had recently finished high-school, so I didn't have any plan for the next two months.

The next thing I know, I was in a train to Bucharest with the two girls. We were traveling extremely light, having only some clothes, some euros and a really good vibe. From Bucharest, we took a train to Timisoara and from here we were going to hitchhike to Macedonia. The sun was almost up when we arrived in Timisoara and we decided to visit the city. We walked all day, looked around, visited a nice Dali exhibition, had the best Cuba Libre in town and at sunset decided to leave the country. We reached the highway and lifted our gorgeous thumbs up. The second car stopped and took us in Deta, near the border with Serbia. But from there, we had another 10 km to walk, so we decided to hitchhike again. A really old car stopped with a middle-aged funny couple. I felt in a bizzare comedy, because the man had a funny wig and a golden tooth and he kept arguing with his wife about some domestic unimportant issues in an extremely funny accent. But, in a couple of minutes we reached the border. Now, here comes the exciting part. It was almos dark and no car was passing by, so we crossed the border by foot in the odd looks of the revenue officers. There was nothing beyond the border, just a broad field, the road and some noisy howling. I was starting to feel afraid and thinking that this was not such a good idea. We walked a couple of minutes and we found an old bar with some truck drivers, that were going to Belgrad. The Macedonian girl spoke to them and they were happy to take us to Belgrad. But, i was still feeling scared. Luckily, we arrived in Belgrad at midnight, perfectly safe. We took afterwards a train to Skopje and another bus to Ohrid, the hometown of the girl. Well, that wasn't so bad, but wait until you hear my coming back story from Macedonia to Bucharest, all by myself...
