My Ambition for Future Adventures

I've got the drive to see the world.

‘How did I end up here?’

I’m tapping my pen against the desk. Like the beginning of that Britney Spears video. The one with the school uniform and the bunches? Yes you know what I mean. This desk isn’t in a school. This is in a car showroom.

That’s right. I sell cars. How on earth did I get here? I lean back in my green, swivel chair. I tilt myself back to look out the large, floor-to-ceiling, window. It’s pretty nice weather outside. Windy but sunny. I’ve opened all the boots on the cars on display but there is no one around. It’s desperately quiet.

“You should have made appointments in the week” I can hear my boss reciting this to me on Monday morning when he finds out that I’ve done nothing for the whole day. The whole of this Sunday when every other single person I know is in bed with a hangover.

The wind picks up dramatically and the display flags are going mental. I sigh, knowing I have to take them down before they do any damage to the cars.

The last time I experienced winds this ridiculous I was in the world renown, windy city: Chicago. My sister and I were drifting our way along the Chicago River just trying to find a bit of shade, on our way over to Willis Tower. The breeze was a welcome relief from the heat of the city.

I had done a bit of reading about the Skydeck and the incredible views. I wasn’t wrong. As she stepped into the glass box that hangs eerily over the city she knew not to doubt my recommendations, or my map reading, or my sense of direction again.

Chicago was the first stop on our breeze through the states. After working in a summer camp in Massachusetts we set off across America, stopping to experience wildly different parts of the enormous country. From Las Vegas, to Boston to New York to Los Angeles, we had the best time slumming our way from hostel to hostel meeting incredible characters in each place.

I smiled and let out a little giggle thinking of the highly intoxicated German people we met on a Subway in New York. I realised I was still holding the flag. The wind had died down completely. I put the flag back on its base and watched it wiggle a little.

I returned to my desk to continue scrawling on my map of the world. My next adventure was only a few car sales away.
