Travelogue of a Wayfaring Soul

My Photo scholarship 2010 entry

Worldwide | Saturday, August 14, 2010 | 5 photos

The pictures I am presenting to you hail from the country of Ireland in March. These photographs were taken during my first international adventure, which was actually a music research trip. I received much more than I anticipated: a lust for adventure and memories that ignite my spirit when I examine these photographs, reminding me of these eclectic idiosyncrasies of Ireland, manifested in photographs.

The aerial shot of Dublin was taken before I first set foot onto new territory. It was 7 am and I did not sleep on the plane, but as tired as I was, I could not take my sleepy eyes off of the vast landscape out of the plane window.

As I became acquainted with this new land, I began to play sociologist. The bird was so quiet and calm as I approached to photograph it, but the demeanor of this bird is eerily similar to the mannerisms of those who live in Ireland: calm and collected.

At Bunratty Castle, where the bird photograph was taken, I stood at the top of the castle where the Irish flag waved in the maritime air. Below me was the Blarney Woolen Mills, a rustic building of cobblestones and wood. The smell of burning peat and river water invaded my senses as I looked down.

During a visit to Limerick, I stood atop a castle tower overlooking the River Shannon, the rhythmic pulse of the city and its sublime waters floating through the masterfully crafted stone bridge.

Finally, among the River Shannon and her beauty lay the green territory in a backdrop against the antique stores when, in actuality, Ireland itself is ever so quaint.

My dream job is to be an ethnomusicologist and photojournalist to document music cultures for National Geographic. If this is my opportunity to catch your attention, I hope you think of these photographs as my S.O.S. to you.
