My Scholarship entry - A local encounter that changed my life

It always made it to my “Bucket list”. Never did I imagine that I would do it for real. It all happened on my first trip to South Africa. Apart from being a melting pot of different cultures or the home to the unique and varied flora and fauna, South Africa has in recent times become the place to be in for the adrenaline junkies-from adventurous game drives to skydiving to shark cage diving to bungy jumping, it has it all.
It started with a quiet drive from Port Elizabeth to Knysna till our guide gave us the option of bungy jumping from the World’s highest bridge. Everyone talked about it- both old and young were excited by this prospect. After some hard thinking I knew that I had to do it because this was a once in a lifetime experience and an opportunity to face overcome my fears. Finally there were we three girls who agreed to do it. Our journey began with a short walk to Bloukrans bridge for which we had cross the steel walkway overlooking the river as it flowed under us. Though we were very excited but had prayers on our lips and encouraging words for one another. Finally on the bridge seeing other people for the jump, we felt better knowing that there were other crazy people like us. As the jump started, we could see others jumping on a television hanging above us. We were scared but were at a point of no return. As they called people randomly for the jump, we dreaded to hear our number. However the inevitable happened and my turn came. They got me all harnessed and took me to the edge of the bridge and ready or not, pushed me off it. My eyes were closed during the jump but when I opened it, I realized that I made it through and felt so alive like never before. To add to this I was awed by the nature’s beauty below me. It was the best feeling ever, hanging upside knowing I had conquered my fear. It is this local encounter that has changed my life as it has filled me with the belief that there is no fear that I cannot overcome and nothing that I cannot do!
