An Africa adage goes, "Umwana uushenda, atasha nyina ukwipika" which could be literaly translated as a child that does not travel to encounter different experiences will always praise the mother as the best cook.
This indeed was my experience when i always thought i had seen enough by sticking into my mother country, Zambia. The opposite was true especially when i had an opportunity to meet the Masaai people in Tanzania.
It all started like usual when i took a bus with an intention of climbing mount Kilimanjaro so that i would write about the encounters of my expedition. On my way to Moshi town, we had a stop over at a place called Mgagao. Wow, the place was camouflaged with Masaai people in there attires. From the look of things these people seemed so primitive. For instance, I had an analogue camera, and to my surprise, one of them asked me to take him a photo. I told him that it not loaded, and it makes no sense because he may never see his photo. However, the man insisted. so i flashed to him to cut, and to my surprise, this attracted many more."Take me a photo too", they shouted. Some were even ready to pay me for that. I flashed them until my batteries went low.
This impression made me decide to spend a night there . I lodged in one of the local guest houses but spend almost the whole night with the Masaai taking local brew....I went to bed after midnight and was surpisingly woken up by a Masaai old man the following morning who invited me for breakfast at his place.
I had a very heavy breakfast that day of milk and stiff porridge. Later that morning, we took the cows for graving but came back earlier because they had prepared a banquet for me. We slaughtered a goat, and it was my first time to taste raw blood. However, we roasted the meat and I should admit that it was delicious.
I extended my days of stay with them, and everyday was a day of encounter that has transformed my life and left an indelible mark on me. I will always cherish that experience.
