My Scholarship entry - A local encounter that changed my life

INDONESIA | Monday, 23 April 2012 | Views [594] | Scholarship Entry

I am lucky to grow up in environments that are very close to the moral values which innumerable. My living environment is the peninsula of "South Sulawesi" which is one of the largest provinces in Indonesia. My childhood was spent in a small village called Masolo. I lived there together with people who have diverse ethnic background. The majority of residents of the village are Bugis ethnic. Other ethnic groups are Toraja and Pattinjo. Pattinjo is a unique ethnic because it is the mixing of Bugis ethnic and Toraja ethnic. These occurred because Masolo is a border area and also an area to assemble the Bugis and the Toraja. Of course these give impact on social values and cultures including language that sometimes there is acculturation between Bugisnesse and Torajanesse. For example:
-“Bathing” in bugis=cemme/dio ' and in Toraja = mendio', but for Pattinjo they call it=manjio'
-“In evening” in Bugis=maelo 'mawenni, in Toraja = bongi me lo', in Pattinjo = maelo 'bongi.
Aside from the acculturation of language, a local ceremonial encounter like as harvest ritual called "mappadendang" which is the native culture of Bugis is now also part of the culture of the Pattinjo as a sign that they are part of Bugis ethnic.

I was remember when I was 5, almost every early morning, I always see a group of Pattinjo and Bugis who flocked to their fields with a "bingkung" (hoe) are attached on their shoulders. An oval hat and long sleeved clothing and trousers seemed to be a special uniform of these farmers. He usually came to my village by a motorbike or sometimes by a bicycle. I can see all of this man activities, he did in accordance with his local ethnic groups and from that he opened my eyes about the importance of understanding the values prevailing wisdom in the societies.
