We've made it to Australia!!!

We flew from Singapore on Thurs 3rd Jan and arrived in Perth at 0200 on Friday 4th Jan.....  Slept for a few hours in the airport on arrival and then caught a taxi into Central Perth.  We'd read about a great hostel called Governor Robinsons in the Northbridge area of Perth and so headed there hoping they had a room... They did, a nice double with the best bed so we slept as soon as our heads hit the pillow.  We then woke mid-afternoon and headed out for a recce of the city...  We sampled our first Aussie beer, Carl had a pint of 'Little Creatures' and I had a pint of 'Redback' beer.  Yum.  We're quickly getting used to prices being similar to back home but it's still scary how much things cost here compared to Asia!!  Money is going quickly here..!  In the evening we played some cards and drank some wine (very cheap!!) and got quite tipsy!

Saturday we headed off on a Lonely Planet walking tour which took us about 3 hours in total and started in the centre and finished in Kings Park which is quite far out of the city and has spectaular views of the skyline in Perth.  There was a wedding about to take place in a 'look-out' which would have been incredible.

Back at the hostel and we've moved into a mixed dorm because there were no more double rooms free.  Met a lovely couple called Sylvie and Leo from Austria and Germany respectively. They invited us out for a few drinks along with some of the other guys from the hostel and we went to a funky bar called 'Brisbane' here in Perth.  Carl spotted some famous Cricket players and one of the guys said that they're here for the Beach Cricket on Scarborough Beach... "Beach Cricket" we both said...? We'd love to go..

So, on Sunday we got up early and headed out to the beach, 45 mins outside the city, to watch the beach cricket.  The Aussies were up against the Kiwis in the morning and the winner of that match would meet England, yes England, in the final!!!  Well the Kiwis won that match and met the Poms in the final.  We WON!  By 103 runs to 102!!  The last ball was a drop catch by one of the Kiwi fielders!!  Very lucky!!  We had a great day, saw some good cricket, had a laugh and all for 4 pounds each!!

Today we went to Rottnest Island by ferry.  Rottnest is famous for it's QUOKKAS, big rat like animals with long tails.  They only exist on this island now.  There is some beautiful scenery on the island.  We hired bikes for the day and had a dip in the sea, the clearest sea we have ever seen!

Tomorrow we pick up our hire car and head South of Western Australia to the WINE REGION!  Beccy is happy......!!

Love to you all,

Mr and Mrs H xxxxxxxxxx
