Indoor Sports Centre

My Photo scholarship 2010 entry

Worldwide | Sunday, October 17, 2010 | 5 photos

My name is Tarryn Liddell and I am a university student currently living in Grahamstown and attending Rhodes University. Just outside of Grahamstown there is an informal settlement that houses almost as many people as the town itself. Over the past few weeks I have been working on a public journalism project with my journalism class. We arranged for a public meeting for two of the municipal wards in the township in order to provide the residents of the area with a space to raise their concerns and have their voices heard.

One of the issues that was brought up at this meeting was the need for more activities for the youth to keep them from things like drugs and crime. Currently there is only one sports centre in the township. This is the ward 6 Indoor Sports Centre. I visited the centre many times and got to know the volunteers and some of the children. These are a few of my photos telling the story of the sports centre. The first photo shows why places like the sports centre are so important as children currently play in the litter covered dirt roads as there are no facilities near them. The other four photos illustrate the activities of the sports centre and the good it can do.

The sports centre has the potential to be a beacon of hope for the community as it can provide the children with a place to spend their time and give parents peace of mind knowing that their kids are safe and off the street.
