It had been almost two years since we were staying in that area but had never managed to go up further north.Everybody would gasp and let out cries because they could not believe we had still not seen what everybody would kill to see.We were staying in Jammu & Kashmir,a beautiful state in India which is home to the famous cold desert,Ladakh. Our friends and family used to travel long distances to this part of the country only to see Kashmir in its pristine and mystical form since they had heard so much about the 'Crown of India'.
One fine day,my father finally decided to gear up and we left for the long awaited beautiful journey.Ladakh was some 600 Km away from our town and since it was a hilly region,it often took a longer time than estimated at the beginning of the journey. We finally reached Leh after three hectic days of bumpy ride but still mesmerized by the beauty we had only heard of before.I was so captivated by the grandeur of the hills that I forgot my backache and headache which the doctors said was caused because of less oxygen content in the air since we were at a very high altitude. The moment we were there,I could recollect why every single person who had been there had such great things to say about it.
There is something in the air there, something that I had not smelled before. It was a different misty and dusty fragrance at the same time.It was peaceful and serene.I don't remember ever being so calm on a blue starry night.I went out in the balcony of our room and looked out.I could see even in the pale darkness how beautiful nature could be.There were sounds of Buddhist flags fluttering at a slight distance away from me which were like music to me.I was told by locals there that those flags were meant to ward off the evil spirits.Even though I am not much of a religious person myself,I could feel their belief,I could feel what faith meant to them.
The mornings there are blissful with the sun brightly shining and reflecting the beautiful colours around.Ladakh is mostly brown but you will be amazed to see how little hues of green fill the landscape everywhere. We were on our way to the famous 'Pangong So Lake' when my father noticed an old woman on the road and stopped the vehicle.I have to mention that she was beautiful. She was a fat woman with a brown robe and pale blue head gear smiling at us.Her smile made me realise that sometimes it just take a smile to make someone else's day.She seemed like a happy woman to me and she made my day.
