Swinging around the world

Cambodia's people

“Winning is great, sure, but if you are really going to do something in life, the secret is learning how to lose. Nobody goes undefeated all the time. If you can pick up after a crushing defeat, and go on to win again, you are going to be a champion someday.”- Wilma Rudolph

If you do only one thing when going to Cambodia, it should be falling in love with the locals.

That country was forged on tragedy and massacre, survived and grew stronger, and the people’s smiles were even bigger, their kindness unmeasurable and their souls still pure.

They lost their families, land, freedom for too long but still when you go there, they seem to have move on, living in the past is not allowed when you’re still trying to survive.

We spent half of our lives complaining for all the things we don’t have instead of realizing of how rich we are by being able to eat every day, turn the heating on when is cold and use the air con when is hot, have efficient public transport and healthcare, or something as basic as a hot shower.

We shouldn’t forget that we were once there, every country has suffered a war at some point in history and that was the time were everybody worked together with a same goal, helped each other and make sure everybody could go on.

If I have to pick one or two memories from my trip to Cambodia, one will be a music band playing beautifully, the special thing was that their members were missing their limbs, but still they could create amazing pieces of art and were doing what they loved and being so good at it. Another one will be on one of the tuk tuk on the street I saw the quote “I’m poor, but rich”, that reminded me that I should remember myself every day that the only thing that really matters in the end is the love and nothing else.
