Brazil is known for warmth and joy of his people, wich are especially expressed during the Carnival, the world's most famous national celebration. But in the months of June and July, another party so popular and powerful as Carnival takes place in the streets of many cities in Brazil, especially in the Northeast: the Festas Juninas. At that time, groups formed by people of all ages and social classes dress up in costumes to dance choreographies that are carefully tested throughout the year, at a party so colorful and cheerful as the Carnival. In Rio de Janeiro, this is an expression of the typical suburb, but many of this groups have one of its main stage at the Fair of St. Christopher, a center of northeastern culture in the heart of the city.
It was at this party I found the perfect place to portray one of my favorite subjects: cheerful and genuine expressions of popular culture. As a journalist and amateur photographer, I try to use words and images to know a bit more about the ways of life around me and also to translate it through my particular point of view.
So, join the Travel Photography Scholarship 2011 to South Africa would a wonderful opportunity for me. I might know a country of rich culture and that, to my knowledge, has a people as happy as the Brazilian, while involved with similar social problems. At the same time, it could improve my tools to capture and translate all the wealth that lies hidden in every way of experiencing the human beeing.
