The Adventures Of Susan & Lars "Where are we going?" said Pooh... "Nowhere", said Christopher Robin. So they began going there...

Adventures in Mongolia! (a short preview)

MONGOLIA | Friday, 30 May 2008 | Views [2430] | Comments [7]

We just finished our 2 week roadtrip around Mongolia and Lars is busy working on his next piece d' resistance... so, in the meantime I thought I would give all of our loyal blog readers (i.e. our families) a little preview of our trip and not just because our flight has an 11 hour delay.

imagine the movie preview guy's voice...

IN A LAND BEFORE TIME...

AN ADVENTURE BEYOND IMAGINATION...

A SURVIVAL STORY OF EPIC PROPORTIONS...

Sometime in the 1200s (I can't be bothered with exact details) a young nomad named Genghis Khan came into power to bring together a nation. Not only did he successfully unite Mongolia, but conquered lands far and wide. He established the largest empire the world has ever seen. Alexander the Great, Caesar, Napolean ... all chumps. No man (or woman) has ever even come close to replicating the great Mogonlian warrior, Genghis Khan.

Until now.

Lars and Susan will spend 13 days and 12 nights conquering the wild steppes of Mongolia. But, they won't do it alone. They CAN'T do it alone. In their old school Russian 4 x4 minibus they will be accompanied by 2 Dutch bikers (Bud and Rink), a young folk dancing Slovakian couple (Andrei and Natalya) and a driver who is called “The Doctor.” On this journey of a lifetime, they will encounter many life threatening challenges including 5 flat tires and the gasiest Dutchman you will ever meet. Lars and Susan will need to ride horses that are more like ponies and double humped camels (they are so cute!).

There will be a waterfall with no water and tons of yaks, sheep and goats. They will play endless games of canasta, but with Slovak rules. To fuel themselves, there will be mutton, rice and more pasta than Susan's entire semester in Italy. But will they be able to brave the communist showers?

But, the greatest challenge of won't be the short beds, lack of fruit or vegetables, unreasonable amount of peanuts, or even the gut wrenching drives. No, the greatest challenge will be ... the toilets.

All this razzmatazz and more about flora and fauna from Lars!

P.S. We love comments. They make us feel important. Just kidding... sort of.

Just so you both know, I have been very loyal to your blog from the beginning (albeit it, silently, but I do check it everyday). I'm totally enthralled by the tales and pictures. Quite an experience so far.

However, I was starting to get worried in the last week or so when you weren't updating it regularly, but, alas, Susan has put my worries to rest as the poignant picture of the 'facilities' indicated that internet service is probably equally as antiquated. Good God! That's so primitive means.

Thanks for keeping me amused everyday! Can't wait to see what's next...

Lots of Love,
Carrie

THAT is a toilet????

I'll think of you guys when I'm in the Bahamas this week with running water and pina coladas.

I think you two will have an appreciation for the luxuries we here in USA enjoy -- like no other family members -- and it will color your lives forever. Wonderful to follow your tales! :)

Karen

p.s. Even the "out houses" in Maine were better than your toilet! LOL You could actually sit on the boards!

Wow, that is some facility!!! Does not look like it is any kinder to men than to women, however. We like being on equal footing - boards - for a change.

Lars, I am amazed that your legs did not drag on the ground when you rode off on the steppes. That poor pony must have been very nonplused by the giant that got on his little, low, back.

And about gaseous Dutch - ahhhhh - I remember the streetcars when I grew up. Imagine the addition of wet, sweaty, not clean clothes (people?) and you get the picture. We Dutch do, however, scrub our front stoops daily!!! Did your cohorts discover that you could understand everything they said??

Love to you both. You look terrific and VERY HAPPY!!!! Thank you Skype, for allowing us to be there with them and seeing what's going on.
