Saitama: Introduction to Tokyo's Step Sister
JAPAN | Sunday, 20 January 2008 | Views [508]
Many times, when someone mentions Japan, the first thing that comes to mind are the large buildings with flashy advertisements, hundreds of people crossing at one crosswalk, shops and trendy fashion.
I'll be honest, I thought the same thing too, but that image that we see is all central Tokyo. The biggest crosswalk (in the world?) that is always immortalized in the media is in Shibuya, which also has some of the biggest shopping malls in all of Tokyo. The famous 109 building is know to be Japan's center of fashion and one can just get lost in the sea of people just trying to reach it.
Okay, so that's the picture that most none Japanese people may have and know about but I'm here to talk about Saitama.
Japan has over 55 Ku or prefectures and we the media only seems to focus on Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, etc. but I never heard anything about Saitama.
Upon first glance, I can see why it was neglected. Not too many hip and trendy shops, a bit of a sleepy town and all the fun and happening places are in Tokyo 1-2 hours away.
Don't let that full you though.
I knew this place had charm even during my most trying months here and after being here for 5 months, I'd like to slowly introduce you to this charming, scenic, yet low key prefecture of Japan
