My Scholarship Entry - The Paintings Of Palmarito

I enrolled at the San Francisco Art Institute at 19, among the first group of students accepted younger than 27 in the school's history, was awarded the incoming student scholarship and subsequent merit scholarships, graduated the year photoshop hit the market and dropped out of sight. I kept shooting- medium and large format though that gave way to designing and building commercial interiors. I shot for the odd job and here and there for myself but was put off by the medium's digital takeover and finally stopped making pictures in favor of drawing. The Epson digital rangefinder brought me back to photography.
Raised in Hawaii where as a “local haole” I learned the majesty of place and culture yet was always to some degree an outsider, an identity I believe important as a writer and photographer. It is time I avail myself of those only two things which I am truly good at- photography and writing, and it is my hope to be selected to demonstrate that one can return to form, switch gears midway and begin to travel the road to career change. Life is never a straight line and I am betting that my time spent bookended by photography has better equipped me to document the wider world.
