We determined our last couple of days in Florence would be taken at a much slower pace. We've still walked and walked but with no real agenda.
Saturday we took advantage of the hop on hop off bus ticket we'd bought a few days prior, mainly with the intention of getting us up to the Fiesole in the hills surrounding the city. The town is known for its fabulous views across Florence (not so fabulous this weekend as there is a lot of smog in the air) and the Roman ruins, including a well preserved amphitheatre. We rejoined the bus to head back in to Florence and make a stop at Piazzale Michelangelo where there is a bronze replica of Michelangelo's "David", looking out from this high point over the city. Done with bus travel, we made our way on foot down the hill towards the area just near the Ponte Vecchio in search of a coffee shop I'd read about for a good coffee. It was! Satisfied with our coffee we spent a couple of hours in our apartment with our feet up, then went in search of another Italian evening meal. Again satisfied, we settled in for an early night.
Sunday was very slow. We did what we often love to do. Nothing until quite late in the morning. As the sun streamed in through our windows we listened to the church bells ringing regularly throughout the morning, finally moving outside in the late morning. Finding eggs and "bacon" Chris was pretty happy as he tucked in. We shopped (without buying) and walked and walked. Today in search of the Cathedral of Santa Croce and the "Pinocchio" shop. We found both; we strolled in the sunshine and through shaded streets; we shared a gelato; and wandered along the Arno one last time. We found the haven of our apartment for a short while and went out for an early dinner. Seriously good Italian food with great service.
Again an early evening in readiness for another train event tomorrow
