Chinese Hipstery 101: The Rise of the Beijing Chaoren

My Scholarship entry - Through Local Eyes

The constant conflict of modern China is what has inspired me. Living in the unique environment of Beijing’s Gulou neighborhood, I saw the clash of new and old every day. The Chinese counter culture is perplexing in its replication of classic themes, an irony that taints the term ‘chaoren’. Finally, the underlying significance is that the alternative, ‘hipster’ lifestyle has non-Chinese counterparts around the globe—so it is a subject matter that others can relate to.
As a student employee I learned about different types of equipment, software and media management. I created and produced a webshow for Carleton College athletics. After college I was hired to co-edit a full-length docu-drama piece entitled A Sicilian Odyssey. In Beijing, I worked on corporate commercial videos as a production assistant. However, I have yet to compose anything for myself—this would be a great opportunity to try.
This contest is exactly where I want to be putting my efforts—in travel documentaries. This is a perfect opportunity to develop a reel, learn the process of on-location shoots with a short production period, and use my emcee experience to be the best travel presenter possible!
