My Scholarship entry - Understanding a Culture through Food

WORLDWIDE | Sunday, 22 April 2012 | Views [207] | Scholarship Entry

Culture encompasses not only food but also our way of living, our coiffure, dress, art and belief just to name a few. Food englobes not only one but various cultures. Through food, we can learn about one's culture, likes, dislikes and why not about the person's character and personality. A vegetarian for example will consume only fruits and vegetables and no meat products. Each culture has its own way of preparing food. For instance; the indian, chinese, morocco and italian cuisines each have their own unique spices, colour, taste, flavour and texture. Being a mauritian, I'll talk about the mauritian culture through food. Known as a multicultural paradise with muslims, chinese, hindus, christians and telegus bond together is found a small island in the indian ocean of about 2400 km square, Mauritius. Culture in mauritius is well embellished when it comes to food. In each corner of the streets and in restaurants are present various specialities such as kebab, briani, our famous 'poisson sale', 'rougaille', and large varieties of tropical fruits such as mangoes, coconut, papaya, litchis and pineapples. When we talk of culture, it's not only about food. Food is only part of a culture. But by meeting new people, talking to them, staying with them, sharing new ideas, learning about their way of life, their difficulties and sharing their happiness and sorrow is one manner or path through which we can learn about others' culture. Culture is a broad word and it's true that through food we can learn and understand a culture. A good example is the traditional 'buche de noel' which is a must during Christmas and the chocolates for easter. Culture is everlasting and food has always been a part of our culture.
