Bucharest, Romania: Part 2

ROMANIA | Wednesday, 12 October 2011 | Views [333]

Wednesday 10/12 915am Bucharest, Romania
I woke up and looked at my watch and it said 1130am and I was astonished I had slept through everything, but then I realized my watch must have re-set itself in the night because it was really 730am. But so far, everything is very different here. Maria, the mother, doesn't go into work until around 11am and the three younger girls don't have school until the afternoon, so everyone is still in their pajamas, but everyone is also working. The younger two girls are doing homework at the kitchen table (in the master bedroom) and Diana, who is 15, is in the girls' office. Maria is in here office and everyone is just doing their own thing. Maria told me last night that the girls are all at the top of their class and study hard, which is true because since I got here, that is all they've been doing. She says that as a reward for them being such good students, she likes to take them on trips for their holidays, so that is why they all travel so much.
So far, there has still been no mention of what kind of work I'm supposed to be doing. I was told I'd be cleaning some, but the apartment is pretty much in order. I think this afternoon when the girls and the mom are gone, I'll just start doing something. Right now I feel like I should be doing something, especially since at this time at the farm, I would be starting my required 2 and a half hours of work. They keep treating me like a guest, but I don't want to be a strain!
During the whole night, the two little kittens slept on my bed, and around 5am, I felt something in my sleeping bag with me. And the other one wanted to play and was attacking my feet. They are both really small and cute, but I'm probably going to kick them off tonight because I did not want to play at 5am. They have their own bed, so I'm not sure why they chose me to torture.
Last night for dinner, Maria made a "traditional" Romania dish... it was pretty much a pizza/lasanga thing and the cheese they put in it was interesting tasting and maybe not my favorite, but I hadn't eaten since like 10am, so I wasn't going to turn down anything. Elena also said that her and her mom and the girls were all talking in Romania over dinner about all the things they were going to do with me. Apparently either this weekend or next they want to take me to the mountains so I can see the beautiful part of Romania, and then Elena wants to take me to Macbeth and Dracula's castle at another time. I really am starting to feel like a guest and not a volunteer. Hopefully this will change a little because I WANT TO DO SOMETHING. I don't like sitting aorund all day, which is what I'm doing right now lol.
