My Photo scholarship 2011 entry

Worldwide | Tuesday, November 8, 2011 | flickr photos

Over the past few years I have worked on cultivating a consistent gratefulness for everything in my life; from the many choices and opportunities, to clean drinking water and the ability to buy healthy food. I also began to educate myself about situations and issues faced by others around the world and I realized that the fact I was born in a developed country with a loving family, made me extremely lucky. This realization sparked a desire in me to help others that do not have the basic human necessities that I, and many, take for granted.

In thinking about how I would be able to help others, I decided I would be most effective through something I love. After studying photography texts, I purchased my first DSLR in March 2011 and in August 2011 I went with a friend to Tanzania, to photograph a project for the non-profit Assisting Children in Need, which she helps her father run. I was thrilled to experience the power of photography, both in bringing me closer to the people there and in educating others through the photographs upon my return, and seeing their interest and support in continuing the organizations efforts.

I’m also passionate about wildlife and landscape photography and I would take advantage of this scholarship to the fullest, through my patience and attention to fine detail. To be a professional photographer, with the ability to bring attention to and raise funds for humanitarian and environmental causes, would be a beautiful thing. My passion for people, ability to get along with anyone, and love of the outdoors all help.

I have only scratched the surface in my knowledge about photography, but I learn quickly and I would love to better my technique and vision through this incredible opportunity.
