My Photo scholarship 2011 entry - Stessabelle

I am not a professional photographer, in fact I only own a Sony Cybershot compact "shoot and point" camera, which I've had for five years. I only started taking photos around 5 years ago, but the more I take photographs the more I have become obsessed, to the point where I will now go anywhere and stand in the rain or the beating sun for as long as it takes to get that perfect shot. It's become a passion for me. My other passion is travel, and I love taking pictures, particularly of the people of other countries. I love seeing how different their lives are form ours, seeing their story of their lives in their eyes, and sometimes being able to capture that. I have had no training in photography, and have no technical understanding of it, but know that I love it and people tell me I have a good eye for a photo. I feel I'm now ready to learn more and become more serious about this love of mine. It would truly be my dream job to become a travel photographer, and I can imagine myself being so fulfilled by such a career. The photos I have uploaded were taken in July this year, on a trip through Laos. I feel these photos tell a story of the lives of the people and creatures of Laos. I love the contrast between the contemplative lives of the elderly lady, and the monk, who are both so deep in thought and memory, with the mischievous children, climbing the fence and the little girl on the bench, exhausted after a day of fun. I found the elephants i met there so beautiful and soulful, and I wanted to capture this by looking right inside one of the elephant's eyes. I really like this shot, and think it is such a beautiful, bashful eye, with lovely long lashes. I found Laos such a spiritual, beautiful place, and think the photos tell that story. I hope you enjoy them. Thanks, Steph
