The Wilderness of Alaska

My Photo scholarship 2011 entry

USA | Tuesday, November 8, 2011 | 5 photos

Through these few photos I have tried to encapsulate the sense of the vast wilderness that is Alaska. Alaska truly is 'the last frontier', a land of amazing creatures, magnificent wildflowers and beautiful mountain landscapes.
When I was 10 years old I wrote on my school project that I wanted to be a wildlife photographer or documentary maker. Many things have changed since I was 10, but my desire to become a wildlife photographer has never faltered.
Photography to me has always been about capturing the moment, something I believe is vital for a good shot. I have spent many long hours waiting patiently for that 'moment' to happen! My biggest problem is that I cannot always capture something the way I'd like to due to my lack of technical skills. I have taught myself everything I know so far and would love the opportunity to learn new skills (and improve current ones) from a professional in the field. I find I always learn best 'on the job' where I can put everything I learn in to practise straight away. Africa to me seems like a great destination to learn about utilising light and capturing action, both of which I'd love some help with!
I would love to get a step up into the world of nature photography and gain valuable skills and experience with a highly regarded company, as I see nature photography as being a way of encouraging people to care about the incredible living world around us. For me, I get experience a rush of adrenalin when I finally spot the animal I have been looking for and am able to photograph it. Similarly I believe a photo can make someone feel a strong emotional response that can inspire them to care about that photo’s subject.
