Summer nights and ice cream in the backwater of Melbourne's west

Melbourne, Ice Cream

On the outskirts of Melbourne lies a viewing area where young lovers and families gather to watch planes land at Tullamarine airport.
It's an odd spectacle: A showy sunset, a truck that should be at the beach and airborne passengers on their way home oblivious to the entertainment below.
When I travel I tend to have a love-hate relationship with the feeling of being an outsider. There is something to be said for getting to know the locals but I also find a wonderful rush in observing a place for the first time. New connections flood in. Here, as the local, I tried to ask myself, how can I see things anew?
I’m still asking myself this question having just moved to the Netherlands to focus more on photography. In fact, searching for new connections drives much of what I love about travel and documentary style photography. I wonder constantly how to capture the world we live in in a way that has atmosphere and originality -- I recently came across Vivian Maier’s New York photographs and I admire her for this very reason. What a brilliant visual mind!
My next photography project will have a Dutch focus and of course, I also have my eyes set on Greenland. My fingers are crossed!
