My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited

I always had an interest in travel and journalism, so naturally I was drawn to photography, to documenting life. The summer before my last year of journalism school, I bought my first DSLR and travelled to Southeast Asia on a backpacking trip. That’s when I really became obsessed with documentary and travel photography. The obsession only grew after I took an academic internship at Canadian Geographic. That experience really shaped the photographer I am today. Among many things, I developed my first major project on urban Inuk children in Ottawa, in which I learned many skills on developing an essay, telling a story through the still image. After such an impactful experience with Canadian Geographic, I am confident that the Travel Photography Scholarship, a chance to be mentored by a National Geographic photographer would be an extremely potent opportunity for me. I believe I would be fully absorbed in this eight-day adventure, taking everything in. Now I am on the road, a nomad travelling around Brazil and South America indefinitely. I am drawn to many things as a traveler, but I am never far out of reach of one of my cameras photographing life and travel as I see it.
