My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited

I have always been drawn to photography as a way to tell a story, elicit emotion and make one experience the journeys of others. When I was a teenager my father gave me his old 35mm camera that I loved. I taught myself about f/stops and shutter speeds and dragged that camera around with me for years, making people wait while I set up shots, trying to capture the correct settings. Years ago I put that 35mm camera aside in lieu of point and shoot digital cameras with their catch-all settings and have relied more upon my artistic eye than technical knowledge. One of the reasons I wish to win this competition is to be afforded the opportunity to learn the techniques I have until now just “felt” my way through. Being unemployed for the last few months, I realize that travel-photo journalism would be a career I would love to enter but have no experience in and don’t know where to start. By winning this competition, at 49, I could finally begin a career I’ve always wanted to pursue. I love to travel. I enjoy writing. I love adventure and am rather an adrenaline junkie. I’m hard working and love learning new things. I think I’m the perfect person for the opportunity you are providing.
