    It's hard to imagine how life can go on in a city that was hit so heavily, but Christchurch fights back – the “Re:Start” project in the “Red Zone” and former downtown area gives shop owners the possibility to reopen their businesses – rebuilding the center will take at least another 10 to 20 years. New hope for Christchurch. Views[622] Other roads and residential areas have also been affected by the quake, so many beautiful houses that had to be left behind. The boardwalk on this street resembles a rollercoaster more than the street it was once before. The autumn leaves add to the sadness of this area. Views[543] Some single houses are scattered around the Red Zone, the downtown area which are still standing. And they give you a chill – because they are standing as if they had just been left a few minutes ago - except for all the dust of the past two years covering the interior. And an abandoned mug left by someone who had to flee when it happened. Views[375] The remaining fascade of the Isaac Royal Theatre which is held by those large containers – to me a desperate effort to keep it standing until they rebuild the backbone of the building. Views[525] I am currently travelling around the globe, and these images are a portrait of the city of Christchurch, which was heavily affected by two earthquakes, in September 2010 and February 2011. It left a huge impression on me about the force of nature and why we should be more respectful of it. Most parts of the central business district are gone, or had to be destructed. This church detail demonstrates the severe power of an earthquake – a cracked arch above the entrance, parts have fallen down. Future will tell if the church can be restored. Views[591]
