Fishing in troubled waters

My Photo scholarship 2011 entry

Worldwide | Sunday, November 6, 2011 | 5 photos

These are a series of pictures from Gokarna - a beach on the western coast of India, in the state of Karnataka. It shows a group of fishermen trying to fish during the Indian south-west monsoon in the month of September. Gokarna is a favourite destination for domestic as well as foreign tourists, but the small local fisherfolk population still eke out a living with their traditional skills. The sea is very rough during the monsoon and fishermen in small craft take on the ocean despite this so that their families have enough to eat. Fishing using trawlers and larger craft is banned for a couple of months in the monsoon.

I am an architect teaching at Manipal - a small university township in Karnataka. I like travelling in the mountains and other wild places of India. The Sea, the Sky and the Mountains are my favourite subjects and travels in the Western Ghats, Himalaya and beaches of India keep me occupied.
