My Scholarship entry - The Life of a Kindergartener

South Korea | Wednesday, July 3, 2013 | 5 photos

I recently listened to an interview with Ira Glass (of This American Life) in which he spoke about the early years of his career. During that period Ira believed he had good taste and a critical eye when it came to judging quality material. However, despite his discerning palate, he couldn’t figure out why his own projects kept falling below expectations.

This observation really resonated with me because I also see that difference between the work I make and the work of the photojournalists and artists that I admire. I know it’s possible to close that gap and that’s why I want to keep learning and pushing myself to make something a little bit better than the time before. I want to break through my personal barrier of mediocrity!

There I so much I would hope to learn from a mentorship with Jason Edwards- everything from how to preset my settings for actions shots to post-production. I believe photography is a powerful medium of communication and I want to improve my skills so that I can share honest and insightful stories- stories that are just as meaningful fifty years from now as they are today.
