My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited
South Africa | Friday, January 11, 2013 | 4 photos
I was born in South Africa, and lived there until I was 7 years old, when I moved to Australia. I was oblivious to the issues being experienced by my home country, but it was when I started paying attention to the daily death tolls, immigration statistics as well as the deterioration in some of the world’s most precious wildlife, that I began to understand the opinion of the world towards my beloved South Africa. I don’t see all those numbers and run: I saw a nation rich in culture, history and beauty. My question to myself was how do I get the rest of the world to see this?
My answer is photography.
In my photography, I often try to be honest and real about the situation I am photographing, but I am a glass half full kind of girl, so its hard for me not to portray the positives. I feel we are obligated, as Humans, to do our part to help others and to help the earth sustain itself. Photographers are given a gift that precedes language: a form of communication that doesn’t need to be spoken, in order to be understood. I want to learn and experience all I can in order to speak this language to the world.
