"Faces" : My Photo scholarship 2011 entry

India | Monday, November 7, 2011 | 5 photos

It is said “You can't photograph, if you are not in love" and that feeling of being in love urges you to capture different frames of your life in a way that you may cherish forever. Photography always fascinated me, it was a bright Sunday morning when my parents took me to the zoo in Calcutta and gave me the freedom to go around and click. I was only 7 years old at that time. Things haven't changed much for me since then. I still feel as excited when I go out and click. With this passion in photography I'm looking forward to consider photography as a career in the future. Also I believe this opportunity of sharing my photos in this platform and getting selected, might help me develop more as a photographer and story teller in the future.
“Faces”- as the name suggests, my collection of 5 photographs show the natural emotions of the people at a yearly fair in Surajkund, Haryana, India. People from all across India come to attend this fair, the right place to capture the cultural and the emotional diversity of the country. My first photograph of this north eastern kid who had just stopped crying was still waiting for her mother to come; the helplessness of the kid is very much prominent on her face. The next photograph shows her mother who is a florist is busy selling flowers. Deep in her mind she was thinking about her crying daughter, sitting amidst bright flowers which portray happiness ironically. The following one shows a man dressed up as lord Hanuman and busy entertaining the passers-by and this kid who was standing at the back and couldn’t see his favourite lord perform. The day ended with the photograph of this saint who was praying for the goodness of humanity at sunset. Through these photographs I also tried to capture the vivid colour tones, which resembles a typical Indian fair.
