My Scholarship entry - Exploring a Penguin Colony in Antarctica

I'm a 24 year-old graduate student who is currently enrolled in NYU's Food Studies program. I consider myself an amateur photographer and I'm working very hard to improve my skills in order to become a better photojournalist. My goal in life is to cover food issues around the world, documenting the stories of local people and bringing their words to life through photography. Questions like—How are we going to feed 9 billion people by 2050?—need to be more addressed in the public eye. I believe people in the media need to shed greater light on how broken food systems are affecting people all over the globe.
This travel photography scholarship would not only help me learn more technical aspects of this art form, but it would also teach me what it takes to create a great photograph in an extreme environment. Many of the places I'm planning to travel for my food stories are hard-to-reach locations such as the Peruvian Amazon, so accompanying Jason would be a really invaluable experience for me. I think the lessons I would learn from him would probably change everything I know about photography and really push me to the next level as a photojournalist.
