It took 30 years, but finally I figured out that my instinct to take photos of EVERYTHING was not just something that I should do for myself, but something that could document history, educate people and advocate for causes. Obviously it sounds incredibly conceited to think that "I" could influence the world with my camera and some ideals that I would like to enforce on others, but the intention is to portray life with complete honesty, and leave the rest to the viewer.
I've always done things in life just because they "felt right" without knowing why. I was quite happy to go with it, after all, that feeling found me working with giant tortoises in Ecuador, working summer camps in the US, living in a tent in Canada, and editing a community newspaper Australia. The one constant theme throughout was my sheer desire to take photos every second of the way; never leaving home without a camera, to document the world and all of its intriguing diversity. Now it has taken me back to school to study photography. In my mind, there's no more important medium than photography. I just want to learn how I can get the most value out of each of my photos, and each of my projects.
