My Photo scholarship 2011 entry

These photos are from a few different communities. Two are from a blind school in East Nepal and the others are from a remote village in Southern Nepal. It amazed me that just a simple surgery could have given Ramesh a life full of color and sight, but alas nothing was done and now at age 18, he can only see shadows as his eyes are fully covered with skin.
The two young boys in the one picture are both mute. Their father one night in drunken rage, angered by their goofing around took a huge traditional knife and cut both their tongues out. They hang out in the community and are taken care of by those who live around them.
I am always amazed by peoples joy in uncontrollable circumstances. Just a small glimpse of hope here and there. Whether its the joy you get from your sisters embrace or the smile that you cant help but have because you are thankful for what God has given you, all things have a purpose, a rhythm to life.
I have been traveling since I finished college in 2005. At age 28, I thrive on life in other cultures. Through my travels I have seen things that I could have never imagined. I just enjoy telling stories with pictures. I would love the opportunity to learn from someone first hand as i have never been given a chance like that before. I am a quick learner, and think that the opportunity to learn from Jason first hand might just be thing that helps me peruse photography for all that it is. I love South Africa, and the beauty there. So much life and so many stories just waiting to be told! Thanks for the opportunity to try!
