My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited

Nepal | Monday, July 8, 2013 | 5 photos

My interest in photography began at a young age when my Nanna unexpectedly signed me up for a subscription to National Geographic magazine. Captivated by the magazine and its images of far off places, I wasted no time in cutting them into pieces and plastering my bedroom walls with the images.

After considering career options ranging from marine biologist to equestrian stunt-woman, I went on to study photography at art school and graduated with a Bachelor of Visual Arts last year.
Through my travels, and perhaps in part due to my brief bittersweet affair with the art world, I have since decided that documentary photography is the thing for me.

Photography excites me in its ability to be both simultaneously connected to the real, whilst possessing an unreal suspension of reality unlike any other art form. It is this unique relationship that I am always trying to explore through my work. For me, the allure of a career in photography is the broad scope of fields it allows one to explore - necessarily reflective of the world, being a photographer almost seems akin to being able to pursue every "when I grow up" ending I had ever dreamed up as a child.
