My Scholarship entry - Inner thoughts through travel
Canada | Monday, November 24, 2014 | 5 photos
My name is Scott Newman, and I am a Canadian who was drawn into photography initially because of the science. My education was in photonics and optics and I was drawn to my first camera as an opportunity to apply the theory I had learnt. It was not until I began to travel that I started to see photography as a venue to create art and tell stories.
Visiting new places taught me to start seeing the world around me differently. A lesson I try to apply at home as well. I still look to light and the technical but now I search for the angle and composition that will speak to people who will see my work. Like many of my fellow applicants, I am still growing into my own style of photography and yearn to continue this growth and dream of perhaps making this a career and life. What I do know is that I have felt that special joy when one of my photographs causes someone to pause, even if only for a moment, to think about their life and their world. This scholarship presents an unfathomable opportunity for me to learn firsthand how to not just document a moment but to bring it to life and tell the story behind it.
