My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited

I am a believer in images. I marvel at the ability to capture a genuine moment of life that would otherwise be fleeting. I have been moved to tears by photos.
That said, I also believe in words. My undergraduate degree is in journalism. I spent several years as a newspaper columnist, and I am currently a master’s degree candidate in a creative writing program.
More than anything, I love work in which the two compliment each other, like the chocolate and peanut butter of the creative world.
My goal is to provide both to a reader -- resonant words and inspiring photos.
In 2010, I quit my job at a newspaper to backpack around the world. I wanted to figure out my place on this planet, see what I had to contribute. I had no idea where the road would take me.
During my year of travel, I found the world to be full of fire and magic. I saw flowers growing on the dirt of mass graves, I met people living unscathed among bullets, I watched a revolution happen. In these moments, I realized I was still hungry to learn about people, discover new places and make connections. I realized more than anything, the world needs compassionate, sensitive storytellers, and I need to be one of them.
